Episode 12: Someday I’m Gonna Upset Somebody - My Apologies in Advance, 04/09/2021

Not “upset somebody” as in “tHe WoRlD iS tOo Pc” but upset somebody as in, “When I write about it, I’m gonna tell my side of the story.”

Another episode that’s basically one long tangent, pretty sure I said “like” over 100 times, my bad, I’m so sorry. I’ve never denied coming off a little, uhhh, ditzy. It is what it is. This week, I talk about going back to my hometown for a few nights, trying to steer clear of drama even when people are sucking you into it...a.k.a. I tell the TLDR story of the time I discovered an...article? Piece of literature? Well, something about me, written by someone I’d never met. That was definitely a weird chapter in my life.

You Own Everything That Happened to You

In today’s episode of SWDW, I talked a lot about owning “everything that happens to you,” a notion I learned from novelist and memoirist, Anne Lamott.

In Bird by Bird, an essential reference for writers, Anne speaks to the importance of telling your story, even if it doesn’t always shine a positive light on others.

Honesty in Self-Reflection

Okay, I was maybe a little sassy or maybe flippant while recounting my experience in discovering I’d been written about, but I meant everything that I said.

While it wasn’t a fun thing for me, people need to tell their stories as they see them, and that’s not always pretty. Mostly, I just felt weird but now I just feel indifferent.

As the person behind the “process,” it’s important to be honest in your self-reflection and assessment of a situation, but sometimes, honesty looks different to people. Yikes…It is what it is.
